Kubalove is a solo artist/songwriter producing shoegaze, synthpop and electro music. Formerly known as Ladylove 'All I Want' is her second single release.
Anna a.k.a Kubalove explains her first commission with Radar "It was great – very simple and easy. I was actually surprised by how easy it was, and kept thinking there must be a catch, but there wasn’t – it’s a great service.
I received a number of good pitches, which was impressive considering my low budget. But when my director Susie Francis came along, it was an easy choice to pick her since she really stood out as offering something awesome for the price. I’m lucky because she just really liked the song, and therefore was happy to work with a very low budget. Luckily she managed to film most of the video by calling in favours from her friends in the industry.
I’m based in London whereas Susie is based in L.A., and all the filming took place in the US. Although this meant I couldn’t attend the shoot, it was absolutely fine communicating with Susie over the internet – we spoke over Skype as well as by email a lot. I’m really glad I picked the option that the filming didn’t have to take place in London, as I would have really missed out on a great opportunity here.
I’m an unsigned artist and really wanted a video for my single, but didn’t have a lot of budget to play with. I had looked at filming something with a low-cost studio in London, but I wasn’t impressed with any of the videos these budget production companies were coming out with.
Therefore, I thought I’d post a brief on Radar, just in case there were any really talented up-and-coming directors out there looking to gain more experience and looking for a high quality track to work with. Lucky for me, that’s exactly what I found.
Despite the fact that Susie had a lot of experience with music videos already, she was relatively new to directing and therefore open to taking a chance on a track she really liked. I can’t think of any other way we would have linked up except through Radar.
I loved getting the chance to be involved at every stage of the production, despite the fact it was happening on the other side of the Atlantic. Susie kept me informed at every stage and this meant that I could have lots of input, which was great.
For example, I got to check out at publicity shots of all the hot models Susie was considering for the video – and I was amazed at the calibre of star she was auditioning! She ended up picking Kasimira Miller, who’s a smoking hot fashion model in L.A., and her Hollywood actor Tarquin P. Wilding – who also happens to be Elizabeth Taylor’s grandson. I just don’t meet these kinds of people in London, so that’s why it was so awesome to be working with someone as well-connected as Susie. People seem to love the end result – it’s so visually beautiful and very sensual. It actually seems to be getting people a bit hot under the collar! It’s pretty suggestive and provocative – but I actually think those are perfect ingredients for a great music video…"
Director Susie of 890 Productions gives us an insight into her first music video "About 2 years ago I started working on sets as a PA / set decorator and moved up to production designer in the last year. I work primarily on music videos and commercials and recently just Art Directed my first feature under PD Ashley Fenton.
The more access I've had to the film process, the more I saw myself move into directing. I couldn't think about anything else so thats when I signed up for Radar and started bugging my friends to help me make something. “All I Want” was my very first opportunity directing and hopefully not my last haha- I’d like this to be a full time gig one day.
Having never directed anything in my life, Radar was a great place to start. It connected me with an amazing artist and is now featuring my work. I couldn't ask for more.
I imagined the rough idea of the concept the first time I heard the song. My initial thought was just to have intimate micro shots of a couple kissing on a turntable and than it quickly evolved into more of a story.
My favorite moment on set was watching 6 friends, including my producer Jason Colon, curled up on the floor, sweating and exhausted from trying to rotate the actors on this giant wood turntable. It was a hot one in LA that day... Everyone on the crew was just incredible - I was just so lucky.
I didn't have to work with a commissioner on this project. It was only Anna Jackson (Kubalove) and I going back and forth via email and Skype from LA - London. Anna was so supportive from start to finish and we really trusted each other.
The video just came out and is already on my favorite sites, IMVDb.com has featured it on its front page, and videostatic.com gave it a nice review. I'm really grateful to receive the positive feedback. Thanks for the interview Radar!"
