This is the first work by directing collaberative RnD (aka Rob Fairhurst & David Mahmoudieh) after shooting the Coldplay Lost? competition entry. The Detachments 'Flowers that Fell' was Commissioned through the mighty Radar for Thisisnotanexit Records & produced by Aspect Ratio Productions Ltd who turned our ambitious WWI concept into reality by moving tons of earth, dressing, propping, pyroing, equiping and stretching the meager budget as far as I have ever seen a meager budget been stretched before. Of course they pulled in a favor or two to help make this unique little promo happen.
Shot with Aspect Ratio's EX1/SGpro/Nikon set on a very, very cold January 2nd, 2009 at Yardley Hastings MOD base. The shoot began at 6am and was wrapped by 3.30pm as the light had well and truly beat us. The Band reflected throughout the day on how miserable it must have been for those poor souls in the trenches, however we all realised that one days filming in cold mud does not give us even the slightest insight. We all went home.

& The Detachments

Nicely done I would have never guessed that was done on a £723 budget.
This is something very special. It feels more like a film than a music video, love the art direction. Love the weighty feel of the camera. Pretty sad too!
Puts the pro in promo. An exercise in budget stretching.
I can't believe that was done on such a small budget
Yes great for the budget, but lets be honest someone's pulled some serious favors with the art direction and that's quite a big crew/cast that have worked for no pay. Well done for puling it off.
Hi Gregoryb,
thanks for the comment. You are totally right, Aspect Ratio Productions did pull in a few favors for us, as stated in the blog, but we did actually managed to pay the cast and all of the crew bar RnD & Stephen Fairhurst a little something . Everyone really loved the concept and the idea of doing it as a way to welcome the New Year in appealled to them. We watched it together on MTV the other day and all told it was worth it.
Thanks again.
Rob
Very well done. Inspiring use of budget + great idea.
Love this!! I like how you've broken the bounary between music video and film!
wow! - Whatever the budget was this is very well handled. Lovely look to the footage. What was this shot on if you don't mind me asking?
