Radar Needs Site Editors
Radar is growing very quickly and I can’t keep up with viewing all the videos that are linked here. Many of them are real gems and could be enjoyed by wider audience. Would you like to help and get involved - would you like to become a site editor?
What’s the work?
Site editors view new content, between 10 and 30 videos every week. You don’t need to comment (you can if you like) but you do need to rate each video, using the star system. Editors also need to log what they do.
What happens to the best rated videos?
Editors send on their weekly logs to me, I’ll watch the ones you’ve rated as 5 star. If I agree with you, I’ll approach the filmmaker with a proposal to represent their video. At the moment, Radar represented videos are uploaded to 10 Radar channels on online video sites from YouTube to Blip.tv. Some of these sites do rev share and Radar will aggregate any revenues generated and distribute them back to the filmmaker, taking a 30% commission. Some of them will also be sent on for features in Pitchfork and Shots Ring Out.
What do editors get out of it?
It’s equivalent to doing an internship – you’d do it if you enjoyed that kind of work and if you wanted to add curating experience to your CV. Plus your next year’s membership will be free. Other financial remuneration isn’t available at the moment: cutting editors in on the 30% adds a layer of complexity to Radar's operations (ie time and expense). Realistically speaking it isn’t likely to generate much more than 0.07 of a penny or a cent or whatever for editors at this stage of Radar and online video earning potential in general. However, do read on…
How might this grow and change?
I’m planning to have a system that works a little like SliceThePie, where scouts who accurately predict future track successes share in the earnings of that track. We’re a bit of a way off that yet, there’s some other things I want to get going here first, plus the earnings potential of online video is miniscule at the moment, compared to Mp3s. But all that will change…
Anything else potential editors need to know?
Some more inexperienced/stubborn filmmakers link videos to Radar where they haven’t got copyright permissions, ie tribute videos to Madonna tracks, mash-ups from TV cartoon series etc. If editors come across videos where they think copyright is infringed, you’re asked to send on a polite, pro forma (ie already written) message explaining why it can’t be on Radar. Or if you’re feeling timid, email me and I’ll do it. Either way, it needs flagging up, for it is illegal.
Sounds fab. How do I become a Site Editor?
Email me anytime caroline@radarmusicvideos.com and list 5 videos you’ve seen on the site you've rated as 5 star. So I can get a sense of your judgement, please don’t choose any that are already on the Radar Picks menu. If our judgments are similar, you'll be confirmed as a site editor. If our judgments aren't similar, c'est la vie, you can prove how right you always were when we get the scouting system started and you earn pots of cash out of it.
Thank you!
