Wax stag a.k.a Rob Lee makes shimmering leftfield indie electronic pop full of psychedelic sounding instrumentals and synthesised melodies. For the video to his single ‘And How’, he wanted a combination of creativity, humour, psychedelia and art. Not an easy task perhaps but director Clem Stamation stepped up to and surpassed the challenge having made a stunning visual treat of a video.

Using an animated collage effect that takes in everything as diverse as palm trees, birds, spaceships and coconut trees, the video is brimming with personality with everything vying for space on screen. As Clem says: “It's the kind of song that suggests its own imagery. It sounded like coconuts falling, perfume bottles and confetti cannons so that's what I did.”

But rather than coming across as overly-random or self-indulgent, the video is instead a beautifully orchestrated piece of animation that leaves the viewer thinking that there could really never have been another piece of film to fit the music.

Initially starting the animating process with nothing more than some coloured paper and a pair of scissors, Clem used traditional stop frame techniques to bring his ideas to life. These were then all put together afterwards with computer animation techniques, a laborious process which took two months in total. Things were not made easier by environmental factors which seemed determined to hinder the process as Clem explains:

“Once I had cut out all the paper shapes I spread them all out on the floor to start photographing. The windows in my studio don't really close properly and a massive storm hit covering half my work in hail stones.”

Nevertheless, Clem powered on and the result is a work borne out of a labour of love. A dream job for Clem and another great video to come out of Radar.
